The higher education reporter leads our coverage of colleges and universities, with a special focus on Virginia Tech and Radford University . The beat includes covering breaking news and live events, writing quick features and in-depth centerpieces. This job requires significant organization and collaboration with editors and a keen understanding of the issues facing higher education both regionally and nationally. It will be based in our New River Valley bureau in Christiansburg, Virginia.
Essential duties and responsibilities: Develop sources and cover Virginia Tech, the regions biggest newsmaker, better than our competitors Develop sources and cover Radford University. Regularly break news about events, trends or research happening at Tech and Radford. Expand stories affecting Virginia Tech or Radford to include other schools in the region Collaborate with photographers, artists and team leaders to develop breakouts and visual elements that help tell the story. Remain on top of national and regional trends that affect higher education, and bring those to life in Southwest Virginia Understand the financial issues facing college administrators and students families, and be able to explain those to our readers Serve as a general assignment reporter and a back-up to other reporters as needed

Demonstrated solid news judgment Works well with editors and other reporters Proven ability to write clearly, tightly and accurately Skilled at organization, on deadline and on short notice Understands how the Web can be used to improve reporting. Ability to develop long-term and short-term projects, and to balance the work on those projects with daily duties Ability to operate as comfortably in the presidents boardroom as in college social settings. Bachelors degree Minimum of five years of daily newspaper reporting experience.
